The Wisdom of the Tribe

As I join this course the National Health Service my employer turns seventy years old. The NHS was created out of the ideal that good healthcare should be available to all, regardless of wealth.

When it was launched by the minister of health, Aneurin Bevan, on July 5 1948, it was based on 3 core principles:

• that it meet the needs of everyone
• that it be free at the point of delivery
• that it be based on clinical need, not ability to pay

These 3 principles have guided the development of the NHS for the past 70 years and remain at its core. I am incredibly proud to be an employee of the NHS in 2018 which put patients at the heart of everything it does. I fully intend to use the teaching I learn to make a difference in the context of the NHS.

Moreover meeting leaders from over 33 different countries is truly inspiring as we engage, share ideas and learn from one another.

I believe a core element of leadership is developing others and I am excited about the impact of this not only in 2018-19 but a lasting legacy as we pass on and learn from “the wisdom of the tribe”. As a scholarship winner I am truly grateful for this opportunity and have already had the opportunity to pass on wisdom I have learned from the course to my “mentees”.

Moving ahead with my new venture
