What Oxford is not about

I have always dreamed of the experience of a long-established, highly recognized university, but I have never believed that I would attend one. And, here I was, honored and lucky to be part of the 2017 Diploma in Strategy and Innovation cohort.

I went there without knowing what to expect, but curious and excited about unveiling step by step the Oxford experience. I soon realized that Oxford is everything you’ve ever dreamed of, and nothing of it in the same time!

You benefit from all the brilliant minds in the world, latest research, 120 million plus books in the library. You rejoice from the debates, conversations and opinions shared by your colleagues. You learn, learn and learn.

But also, Oxford contradicted many of my expectations. What Oxford is not about is:

  • Heavy reading; I enjoyed the prep reading and wished I have more time to dive even more into the details of it. The case studies, books, articles were relevant and applicable to my profession, and after 1 module I felt already that I can make a difference in my team;
  • Boring teachers; the professors are there to stimulate our minds, to guide the conservations, and to show practical applicability of theory. They are world-renowned minds and experts in their fields, but I also felt that they are humble and opened to learn something from us too (like that can happen!);
  • Ultra-ambitious colleagues; well, of course all of us are ambitious, but we all share a genuine curiosity to learn from others and generosity to share our experiences that others can benefit from. All these ideas are shared in a very respectful and considerate way;
  • Learn, learn, learn; yes, we are there to learn, but we also had a lot of fun. The connections were formed instantly and we took the debates and discussions outside the classroom. And there are many great pubs and bars in Oxford, where again, you can bump into some of the most brilliant minds of the world.

After coming back from the 1st Module, all I could think about was how can I capture all the treasures that Oxford is so generously handing me. I still cannot figure it out, but I am determined to make the most out of this experience. I loved it, and can’t wait to go back for Module 2!
